Understanding powder behaviour

Powder handling presents a variety of challenges, with a number of properties that can impact the ability to accurately and repeatably get a powder into a container, whether that be an inhaler, syringe, capsule or something else entirely!

Many of these relate to physical properties of the particles, including particle:

  • Porosity
  • Surface Texture
  • Hygroscopicity
  • Cohesion & Adhesion
  • Potential for Electrostatic Charge

These properties on a particle level all impact overall powder behavior, including flowability, cohesion, adhesion, compressibility, permeability and electrostatic charging.

Every powder has it’s own unique set of properties which impact handling requirements and dosing performance. The best way to understand these requirements is through physical testing.
