September 2013 - 3P are pleased to announce that they are providing a paper for the Pre-filled syringe, October, issue of On Drug Delivery Magazine

3P's paper will describe the rise of biologicals and why they present unique challenges. These long chain molecules are both viscous and fragile in liquid formulation, such that they tend to have limited aqueous stability. This is normally overcome by lyophilisation or cold chain. Formulation flexibility would ideally include spray dried and bulk tray dried formulations (which also lower costs) but until 3P's Fill2Weight powder dispenser there was no way of commercially filling such powdered formulations. The paper explains how 3P's unique powder filling technology is an enabler to both novel formulations and injectable devices.

3P present again at AAPS: a poster was presented at AAPS 2010 in collaboration with IPM

3P's groundbreaking work in the application of Raman spectroscopy was recently presented at the the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) in New Orleans. A tailored system was developed to handle medical devices containing active pharmaceutical ingredients (API's). Very low levels of drug were measured accurately. This enabled the system to save significant time and cost in the development of the product's manufacturing process: experimental results were provided in real time to inform the development team. Using quality by design (QbD) principles the critical quality parameters (CPP's) of the manufacturing equipment were selected in response to design of experiments using the Raman system developed by 3P innovation.

Lab Dosator Technical Poster Recently Presented at AAPS. 3P's groundbreaking work on dosator powder filling technology ( has been recognised with a poster by one of 3P's clients at the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) in Los Angeles late in 2009. A laboratory dosator was fully instrumented to record dose weight, plunger forces and plunger positions. This was used to provide quantified process understanding for a range of compounds. Meaningful data was gathered at conditions simulating operation of a high speed capsule filling machine. Crucially this invaluable process understanding was obtained using small quantities of high value powders. This enabled process and formulation optimisation ahead of commercial scale trials.

November 2008

2008 Drug Delivery to the Lungs (DDL)

3P are pleased to announce that they will be presenting the revolutionary Fill2Weight Technology at the forthcoming DDL.

Fill2Weight can fill a wide variety of inhaled powders into blisters, capsules and inhaler devices using a unique filling technology. By using a high speed weigh cell and flexible high speed filling technology the system can rapidly fill between 1-100mg of inhalation powder without size change parts. 100% of all weights are recorded, such that the unit provides an ideal complement to your QbD and PAT initiatives. In addition to Fill2Weight, 3P will also be presenting other filling technologies.

Edinburgh is hosting the 19th DDL between Wednesday 10th and Friday 12th December 2008. DDL is the premiere European conference relating to the development of inhalers for the treatment of both respiratory diseases and also for systemic drug delivery.
(16th November 2008)

2008 International Dry Powder Inhaler Conference - Outstanding response to Fill2Weight technology
3P's new and innovative Fill2Weight technology generated significant interest at the conference. It has the ability to record 100% of filled weights into blisters, capsules and devices together with the potential for improved bioavailability due to compaction free filling. With its compact size and high speed, Fill2Weight technology also provides the ability to move from clinical supply to commercial with the same system - scale-up is eliminated.

Speaking directly after the conference, 3P's Managing Director, Tom Bailey, enthused that "attendees really understood the significant patient, clinical supply and commercial benefits of this scaleable technology. The conference attracted a large number of senior decision makers from "big pharma" and the larger generic companies. As a result we have already begun the process of agreeing non disclosure agreements with a number of potential clients and are in serious negotiations for the supply of Fill2Weight units. The reason we invested in the development of this proprietary technology appears to have hit a chord with a number of major inhalation device developers and producers"

Dr Dave Seaward, 3P director, who also attended the conference was equally enthusiastic about the response "our booth generated alot of interest from the attendees. I found that scientists and managers engaged in pharmaceutical and device development were impressed by the Fill2weight's flexibility to run both cohesive and free flowing powders with only software parameters changes, and our self learning algorithm adapts for physical property changes within a powder batch. I was also able to demonstrate key-board dose weight change with the click of a couple of buttons on the control screen - dosing 7.5mg accurately one moment and then 15mg accurately the next without size change parts or mechanical adjustment is unheard of. We dont know of any other system capable of such flexibility, and certainly not at the speeds we can achieve. The customers who worked in development really understood how this technology would simplify clinical sample production, save time and ultimately save laboratory cost.

The device programme managers had a different focus and they understood that our compact high speed design enabled the same units to be used in development as in commercial. The ability to eliminate scale-up issues and get a product to market a few months or even years earlier provides huge financial benefits over existing technology... and this is combined with an ability to provide additional compliance due to the Fill2Weight's ability to record 100% of your critical process parameters: actual filled weight's during clinical supply and then during commercial production are recorded. This technology fits beautifully with the current process analytical technology (PAT), Parametric Tolerance Interval Testing (PTIT)and Quality by Design (QbD) initiatives."

3P look forward to supplying additional Fill2Weight units to the inhalation sector in the near future.
(7th June 2008).

The launch of 3P's revolutionary milligram dose to weight system
3P will be holding a tabletop exhibition to industry leaders of inhalation devices at the 2008 International Dry Powder Inhaler Conference to be held at Le Meridien Hotel, Piccadilly London between 5th and 6th June 2008.

3P will be launching an innovative compact filling system which fills a wide range of powders between 1-100 milligrammes. The high speed system uses a latest generation weigh cell to provide 100% inspection and recording of filled weights to a 0.1mg precision. Initial applications have been for clinical sample production as the unit easily fits within a downflow booth. The high speed, accuracy and compact design also make the system scaleable to multitrack commercial systems.

Also on show will be the latest variant of 3P's laboratory dosator system. This uses commercial dosator principles to provide clinical samples of capsules, or devices, filled with powder. The unit is compact and has been designed to fit comfortably within a downflow booth. The system has an optional weighcell to provide 100% recording of weights. For those clients with a desire to develop enhanced process understanding there is also an instrumentation pack option which measures pin force against position during the dosator process. By using 3P's process understanding the system is configured to match clients' current commercial capsule or device filling systems. This provides clinical samples with confidence when commercialising the product. For those clients with larger batch requirements the system can be fed with powder automatically from a larger hopper and loss in weight feeder. Please visit for more information.

As always, 3P representatives will be happy to discuss any tailored engineering solutions with prospective clients. Of specific interest to the inhaler conference will be 3P's experience with tailored laboratory and end-of-line test equipment as applied to inhalation products.
